New television revolution

The giant Consumer Electronics Show (CES) kicked off in Las Vegas this week, with Korean rivals Samsung and LG unveiling new “smart” television technology that shows clearly how the battle over online media and applications is spreading from computers, phones and tablets and onto big-screen TVs.

It’s now considered only a matter of time — perhaps months or even weeks — before Apple unveils its first foray into flat-panel TVs. Tech’s Doomsday Plots: How Your Favorite Tech Giants Could Lose Their Edge

When Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone five years ago, it was a happy day for the Apple faithful. Less so for the folks at Palm, whose employer became a ticking time bomb. In one move, Apple leapfrogged its rivals in hardware and software and changed the mobile industry forever. And Palm — a touch computing pioneer that lost its way — was toast.

That’s just one example of how quickly a company’s fates can change in today’s fast-moving tech industry. Every company — even those as seemingly strong today as Apple and Google — have clear risks and weaknesses. The iPad could drive Microsoft’s decline. The government could smother Google’s growth efforts. And a mobile player that doesn’t even exist could be the one that takes down Facebook.

Google gets personal, searches your world, not just the Web

For Google, it’s personal. The Internet search giant is no longer going to roll out the same search results to everyone.

Starting Tuesday, Google will pluck only the results most relevant to you — and not just from billions of Web pages but from the personal stuff that you and your connections privately share.

The idea, says Google Fellow Amit Singhal, is that Google now searches your world, not just the Web, and serves up results that combine both for your eyes only.

AMONG online networking sites, LinkedIn stands out as the specialized one — it’s for professional connections only.

What’s going to happen to social media in 2012?

Memeburn asked me to give my thoughts on trends in social media for 2012. I had a look around to see what other people were saying and discovered that the Net is jam-packed with predictions for the coming year, so writing this article feels a bit like I’m pissing in a river and watching it rise. While many writers are posting about how Facebook will cross the 1-billion user mark or Facebook will decline in popularity, I’m more interested in global implications of social media technologies in general. In this article, I will look at how social media is changing things outside of itself, and how the technology market is likely to react to it in the coming year.

Reason to be on Cloud 9

There’s fairly universal agreement that this is likely to be the year of the cloud, the mobile, Africa’s emergence as a new economic region and – as has happened for the past two years – the year of the tablet. Oh, and the apps economy, too.

10 Predictions for Recruitment & Staffing in 2012

Social Recruiting finally went mainstream in 2011 with corporate and agency recruiters embracing LinkedIn and internet sourcing as a required skill for the modern recruiter, shifting away from job-board advertising to digital headhunting. It was also a year of continued economic uncertainty ending with fear of a double dip recession in Europe and beyond. Despite this we will remember 2011 as the year that the recruitment industry took its head out of the arse of the global recession and decided to fight back! Our industry bounced back DESPITE global economic uncertainty and adapted to new tools and international markets that had been previously untapped. 2011 was still a poor year in the grand scheme of things but we made it the most successful in nearly 4 years, we didn’t wait for the economy to bounce back and rush to our rescue; instead we innovated, became leaner and found new ways to grow.

Yahoo Might Also Pick Up Auto Trader As Part Of Its Latest Dealings

Earlier today, Bloomberg reported that Yahoo was interested in WebMD and Weather Channel. Add another name to the list: Auto Trader.

Microsoft and Nokia’s Plans for Marketing Windows Phone in 2012

With tech blogs leaking somewhat inaccurate information about Microsoft and Nokia’s plans for marketing Windows Phone in the United States during the first half of 2012—and others still predictably parroting that information—I thought it might be worthwhile to set the record straight. Microsoft and Nokia will not spend “in the neighborhood of $100 million” to market Windows Phone this year. The companies are spending much more than that.

Google’s Latest Algorithm Changes

As you may know, Google has been putting out a monthly list of algorithm changes it has been making, as part of the company’s initiative to be “more transparent”. Google will never put out the entire secret sauce of its algorithm (without a court order, at least), so webmasters can at least be thankful that they’re being thrown a handful of bones in the form of a monthly list.

Social media in 2012: the experts’ view

I’ve been asking some of our guest bloggers about 2011 in social media, and what they see as the major trends in the coming year.

Social Media: Relation to User Acceptance Testing.

The key to 2012 and success this year has got to be in the social space. Look at it this way, everyone is going social. If you are not, you’re probably going to lose out. Same goes for mobile. It isn’t a wonder that companies like Apple have numerously had top engineering department employees go out to bars and leave iPhone prototypes in bathrooms and on table tops. This has not happened once.

Twitter followers worth $20 each

Columbia – An internet company is suing a former employee, saying he left the firm and took his 17 000 Twitter followers with him.

PhoneDog LLC says Noah Kravitz owes them $340 000 because when Kravitz left to do freelance work, he changed his Twitter name from PhoneDog-Noah to noahkravitz, and kept his followers. He eventually went to work for a competitor.

Mobile Owners Prefer SMS Promotions, says DMA

Mobile owners in the UK, Germany and France prefer receiving SMS-based promotions over other mobile channels, according to research published by the Direct Marketing Association (DMA).

New Stats Show How Critical the Mobile Experience is for E-Commerce

Just how important is the mobile shopping experience? Consider this: the mobile channel’s contribution to retail sales rose from 3.4% to 6.5% between October 2010 and April 2011, according to studies by Coremetrics cited by eMarketer. And, even though mobile purchases are still a fraction of overall sales, consumers increasingly use their mobile devices to research purchases before buying elsewhere. That means the importance of retail mobile websites is only growing.

And, even though mobile purchases are still a fraction of overall sales, consumers increasingly use their mobile devices to research purchases before buying elsewhere. That means the importance of retail mobile websites is only growing.

The 10 biggest tech stories of 2011

The technology industry often finds itself pontificating about the future, but the busy news cycle this year gave us plenty to discuss.

Very influential tech pioneers died; cyber-security cost companies billions of dollars; and trends in electronics and on the Web provided new tools and created new challenges.

Smartphones and tablets each grew so immensely this year that we decided to give them their own mobile year-in-review list.

As for future talk, there were plenty of bold, futuristic initiatives that did not quite bear fruit this year.

A wrap-up of an amazing 2011

Well 2011 has been an interesting year for me, a couple of things have changed, and all mostly in a good way. From a personal perspective, my biggest lesson was that, you should always do what you love. Follow your passion, and sometimes, taking a leap of faith, won’t hurt :) I decided to do wrap-up of my year. Be warned, it’s a pretty long read (1400 words) :)

Dowload Mozilla Firefox with Bing Default Search Engine

Microsoft’s Bing search engine just announced that you can now download Mozilla’s Firefox with Bing set as the default.

It’s a small change that could make a big difference for search engine traffic.

Before, every Firefox download came with Google as the default search engine. To set it to Bing, users would have to go into the settings and change their preferences, something that most casual Internet surfers wouldn’t take the trouble to do. Now Mozilla users can get Microsoft’s search engine at the outset

Why South African companies are looking at the rest of the continent

South Africa’s domestic market is not providing local companies with enough growth opportunities, prompting many of them to look at the rest of the continent.

So said Michael Lalor, leader of Ernst & Young’s Africa Business Centre, during a recent online press conference.

“While South Africa is still growing well compared to the advanced economies, it’s certainly not keeping up with some of the other rapid-growth markets.”

Closing the loop in electronic commerce

This week came with the news that Naspers, a South Africa-based multinational media company with principal operations in electronic media and consolidated revenues for the year ended March 2011 standing at R. 33 billion {Ksh 396 billion}, closed its local operation of Kalahari {www.kalahari.co.ke}; their online retailing outfit. Though the exact reason for this pullout is yet to be disclosed officially, it draws sharp focus to what makes electronic commerce tick, more so that such a well heeled operation would wind up.

Nokia’s Biggest Competition: Android In The Developing World

Nokia is in trouble, and it’s well known: While the firm is still making money, its future plans were cast into deep shadow by the rapidly evolving smartphone scene, led by the iPhone and its OS, which more or less made Nokia’s current smartphones (as well as future generations) obsolete overnight. The firm is trying to pull off a dramatic pivot, with Stephen Elop at the helm, and has just revealed the first Windows Phone 7 devices with which it hopes to save its future

Why Kenya must move with speed to tap automotive market in Africa

Last month, Kenya’s premier motor show took place at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre and this month Africa’s only internationally recognised motor show was held in South Africa’s capital.

I cannot help but marvel at the difference of these two events. While the Total Motor Show was a big improvement on previous years, it lacked the regional relevance it should have.

A Welcome Windows Phone

Windows Phone 7.5 is gorgeous, classy, satisfying, fast and coherent. The design is intelligent, clean and uncluttered. Never in a million years would you guess that it came from the same company that cooked up the bloated spaghetti that is Windows and Office.

Most impressively, Windows Phone is not a feeble-minded copycat. Microsoft came up with completely fresh metaphors that generally steer clear of the iPhone/Android design (grid-spaced icons that scroll across home pages).

Research reveals Canadians would like to sell their own home, but lack the selling savvy

For sale by owner (FSBO) is the new “it” concept when it comes to the real estate market, according to new research commissioned by Kijiji Canada. The study revealed that 61 per cent of Canadians would consider selling their home on their own if it was easy and more affordable than using a real estate agent and, in fact, 22 per cent of those who have sold a home in the past have sold a home on their own at least once.

Will the Local Social Network of the Future Be More Like Facebook or Twitter?

When you smell smoke or hear sirens and want to know what’s going on, when you need to borrow a ladder, when you wonder why a local store shut down, the people who can help you are right nearby. It’s a matter of finding and reaching them.

Even for a hermit like me, it seems evident that there are local social opportunities beyond deals and check-ins. It’s an area ripe for social Web and app development.

What Else Every CEO Needs to Know About the Cloud

I have an article in the new (November 2011) issue of Harvard Business Review called “What Every CEO Needs to Know About the Cloud.” It’s aimed at managers and executives who work outside the IT department and might not know or care very much about what goes on inside the IT department. So why should such people be interested in cloud computing?

Social media goes mainstream in SA

Social media has gone mainstream in SA, according to a new study released today by World Wide Worx (WWW) and information analyst Fuseware.

The report, entitled: “South African Social Media Landscape 2011”, is the result of a combination of Fuseware’s analysis of social network databases, information provided by social networks, and WWW’s consumer market research.

While local success story MXit, and international giant Facebook, continue to dominate in user numbers, the other social networking services are seeing considerable growth. According to the report, social media is now a “core pillar” of Internet activity in SA.

Nokia’s new “Lumia” Windows Phone Smartphone Leaked

To be honest, we have been rooting for the whole Nokia / Microsoft Phone partnership ever since it was announced.. We loved Windows Phone 7 (and the new Mango update makes it even better), but we have really been waiting to see it combined with Nokia’s hardware designs.

Cape Town named World Design Capital 2014: what it means

On Wednesday morning, 26 October 2011, at around 6:20am South African time, the announcement came from Taipei that Cape Town has been awarded the crown of World Design Capital 2014. Since the announcement, it seems that half the people on the SA social media circuit are jumping up and down celebrating, and the other half are scratching their heads, asking “World Design Whadda?”

Africa: Turning the World Upside Down

Whitespace in business is defined as a place, “…where rules are vague, authority is fuzzy, budgets are nonexistent, and strategy is unclear…” It’s the space between the organizational chart, where the real innovation happens. It’s also a great definition for what we see in Africa, and it’s the reason why it’s one of the most exciting places to be a technology entrepreneur today.

E-commerce blow to Kenya as Kalahari site shuts down

Five reasons why QR codes are — mostly — a crock

Dear everyone. Please stop using QR codes. Stop putting them on your billboards. Your posters. Your magazines. Your flyers. Your websites. Just stop. Until you sit down and think about it a lot more carefully. Thank you.

It’s a funny thing when people get hold of a new technology. As people prone to hyperbole, we start shouting from the rooftops how this new thing is going to “revolutionise” (our favourite word) the way people communicate. With QR codes, we’re nattering on about how “virtual and real world communications have finally merged” and how we can now offer “a seamless consumer experience across marketing channels” (yes, these are actually sentences that I’ve heard said about QR codes).

Google’s Ad Rank to Consider Phone Calls, Not Just Clicks

Google AdWords is going beyond the click. Soon, the company’s key advertising product won’t just let advertisers bid for phone calls; it will factor those calls into Ad Rank calculations.

“It’s a giant step forward for AdWords,” said Surojit Chatterjee, senior product manager for Google.

Amazon Suffers Big Drop in Income

Investors shrugged off Amazon’s warnings this summer that its third quarter would be weak.

Whoops.

Moments after the retailer reported Tuesday that operating income for the quarter had fallen 71 percent from 2010, the high-flying stock sank $25 in after-hours trading. Add the $10 that Amazon had lost before the earnings report, and its market cap shriveled in one day by about $16 billion.

Microsoft: Why innovate when you can litigate?

Early Sunday morning, Microsoft’s legal team triumphed over its developers once again, announcing the tenth license agreement with an Android vendor of mobile phones and patents.

The tone of Microsoft’s press release on its patent agreement with Compal Electronics, Inc. was dry and unremarkable compared to the legal team’s blog about the same agreement, which seemed positively bellicose in comparison. The patent arangement, made for undisclosed terms and undisclosed patents, was notable in that it also implicated ChromeOS as an infringing technology.

President Jacob Zuma’s decision to redeploy communications minister Roy Padayachie and his deputy, Obed Bapela, has drawn mixed reaction from the information and communications technology industry, with one analyst saying he was “stunned” by the move and that it would delay several important projects, including the migration to digital terrestrial television.

Bret Taylor: “A Few Years From Now, Most Every Single Person At Facebook Is Going To Be Working On Mobile”

How important is mobile to Facebook? Already, 350 million of its 800 million monthly active users are on mobile devices, and that number is just going to get bigger. “Fundamentally we view it as a really big shift for our company, as fundamental as the shift from desktop apps to the Internet,” Facebook CTO Bret Taylor tells me in the TCTV interview above (which was shot at the Web 2.0 Summit earlier this week). “Companies really need to redefine themselves in this world of devices rather than browsers on people’s laptops.”

Google: Bidding for Yahoo Or Driving Up Cost for Microsoft?

Computerworld — The pursuit of Yahoo seems to be heating up as a report Monday added Google to a list of interested suitors that is already said to include Microsoft.

It’s been widely reported in recent weeks that Microsoft is considering a new bid for the Internet pioneer. And this morning, the Wall Street Journal , citing unnamed sources, reported that Google has met with at least two private-equity firms to discuss making a bid for at least part of Yahoo

Chat with Twitter friends in real-time with the newly-launched Bonfire IM-style chat app.

And, with its direct messages feature and “@” mentions, it can even be used as a fast way to keep in touch with friends. But now, with the help of a new app, tweeps can now use Twitter as an instant message client.

Mobile internet outpacing fixed-line

More than half (56%) of respondents in SA accessed the internet daily, by mobile.

Why mobile is not a medium

Last year was breakthrough for mobile advertising: it grew significantly and, for the first time, became more than a budget-rounding error.

Apple continued to lead in mobile applications and announced its coming-of-age mobile advertising with the iAd mobile ad network.

The Android operating system further accelerated the transformation of the smartphone from an early adopter to a mainstream must-have device. And Apple iPad simultaneously disrupted the PC category and created a new channel for publishers.

“IT IS A mistake to think about mobile as a medium. It is an equal mistake to think about mobile as an aspect of digital marketing.

Mobile’s true significance lies in its ability to move us as individuals from traditional advertising to a rich suite of branded content, entertainment and value.”

Google Links Music Store, Social Networking

Google Inc. is building a music-download store that would work closely with its Google+ social network and could launch it within the next two weeks, according to people familiar with the matter.

Users of Google Music, as the service is tentatively named, could recommend songs in an online library to Google+ contacts, who in turn would be allowed to listen to those songs once for free. The songs would then be available for sale as MP3 downloads, probably for around the usual 99 cents each.

EBay finally gaining traction in China

Just as the Sirens of Greek mythology lured sailors to their doom on a rocky coast, China’s fast-growing Web has drawn Western Internet companies to its shores, where they have seen their business hopes dashed in a treacherous market.

But San Jose-based auction site eBay (EBAY), after initially floundering in China, has charted a new course that’s beginning to pay off.

We Have Grown 200% YoY In India: Country Manager, OLX India

More on Kalahari, Dealfish and Mocality (rumoured) Shutdown

We broke the news about impending shutdown of MIH properties in Kenya and Nigeria. We pulled it as we wanted to clarify other stuffs before responding to comments. From our sources, MIH is truly shutting down its operations in most of the countries it operates on outside of South Africa. What informed this decision, we are yet to confirm, but as soon as we do, we will let you know. Yesterday’s story has led to a couple of impromptu meetings in-house, they decision is thus; Kalahari.com.ng and Kalahari.co.ke will be shutdown, Dealfish.com.gh, and dealfish.ug will go down. The company hopes to continue operations of Mocality.com.ng and Dealfish.com.ng.

MIH own Kalahari.com.ng, Dealfish.com.ng and Mocality.com.ng. Both Kalahari.com.ng and Dealfish.com.ng were launched last year and currently lead in their respective spaces. Yea, enough money was spent…from sources, more than estimated N10,000,000 ($66,000) is spent monthly on advertisement and publicity. The company currently operate from its Ikeja GRA.

Note: there is no official comment yet from MIH, but seems Kalahari.co.ke has already ceased local operations. It is though unlikely that Dealfish in Kenya and Nigeria will shutdown.

Why digital marketing IS rocket science, even in Kenya.

I’ve meant to write about what I see as a major misunderstanding of how difficult digital marketing is for sometime now. More specifically, it seems to be a recurrent theme in Kenya that many people underestimate just how difficult it is to execute a successful and well thought out digital marketing initiative – many think its actually easy to pull-off and that it should cost no more than a few thousand shillings. This is an area where I have close to 15 years experience and even today I still feel like a novice when it comes to digital marketing since its so dynamic and ever evolving.

Hard drive shortages and higher prices coming after massive flooding in Thailand

A large shortage of hard drives is expected in the coming months due to the worst flood to hit Thailand in over fifty years. As you can see in these images, Western Digital has been hit hard by the flooding and the company has suspended production in Thailand. Obviously, it’s going to take some time for Western Digital to recover from the flood damage to its factories. Other hard drive manufacturers (such as Seagate) will also be affected as component suppliers have experienced flooding. According to Western Digital CEO John Coyne, it will all add up to a significantly reduced supply of hard drives into 2012.

Microsoft to buy Yahoo!(?)

A consortium of companies led by Microsoft is assembling a fund to purchase the ailing Yahoo!, the Wall Street Journal reported after speaking with “people familiar with the matter”.

Reported partners in this deal with Microsoft include private-equity firm Silver Lake Partners and Silver Lake investor, the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board. Silver Lake also recently invested in China’s Alibaba in which Yahoo! has a 40% stake.

People familiar with the matter also said that in addition to Microsoft’s consortium looking at Yahoo!, there were at least eight other private equity firms pondering a bid on the former search titan.

Research indicates change in internet usage

The South African Advertising Research Foundation (SAARF) states that a fundamental shift is happening in the usage of internet. Once essentially a business tool, it has now become an indispensible part of millions of South Africans’ everyday lives.

The latest figures from SAARF AMPS Jun 11 show that the local weekly internet audience numbers 5.274-million adults aged 15+, or 15.5% of the total adult population are up from 4% in AMPS 2000. On any given day, there are on average 3.581-million users, or 10.5% of the total adult population.

Future of TV is the internet

The future of television lies in the internet, and access to the web should become universal, software company Opera has said.

As the sales of web-enabled TVs rise, Opera believes the role of TV will grow to more than consuming rich media such as movies, to information systems where users will surf the internet and play games built into TV web browsers.

New service lures dealers to buy your car

You’d think that most of the good ideas would be taken by now when it comes to selling cars over the Internet. But Kelley Blue Book has an interesting new one: the ability for you to easily unload your trade-in car to a dealer.

Working with its parent, AutoTrader.com, KBB just launched a service that allows people to fill in all the information on their current car, including its condition, on the website. That info is then perused by a dealer who decides if they are interested in making an offer on the car. If they are, you just drive down to the dealer and away it goes. You get the check and there’s no obligation to buy a new car, KBB says.

LinkedIn to Launch Talent Pipeline In 2012

The boundary between social and professional networks has blurred in the last couple of years. On one hand, LinkedIn has introduced several social features and continues to gain momentum as the world’s largest social community of professionals. On the other hand, Facebook is fast emerging as a modern age hiring tool. Though Facebook remains the undisputed king of all social networks, it has launched several features worthy of a high end professional network. Similarly, though LinkedIn operated as a pure professional network earlier, it has been ringing in the changes to improve its social quotient.

Facebook teams with U.S. to help the unemployed find jobs

Why our online classifieds startup decided not to pursue the newspaper industry

When Sam and I first began discussing the idea of a new model for an online classifieds marketplace over the summer, naturally our thoughts turned to newspapers. After all, newspapers have been in the business of classifieds for hundreds of years, and had suffered mightily as Craigslist and other competitors such as online job services took away market share and profit. Was there an opportunity for Invantory’s classifieds platform to serve the news business, and perhaps even help it get back on its feet?

Google SSL encryption for search queries: the experts’ view

As announced yesterday, Google will begin to encrypt searches made by logged in users, which also means that sites will no longer receive referral data from these searchers.
